The eighth general convention of Newa Dey Daboo has elected Rashmila Prajapati Shrestha as its president. She who has been active for a long time in the women’s rights and ethnic movement. Her electing unanimously to her leadership of the New organisation is a new chapter in women’s leadership in the Newa Dey Daboo.

Prajapati, the newly elected chairperson has been active in the organization for nearly two and a half decades, was previously in charge of the vice president. He is also the founding president of Newa Misa Daboo (Organisation of Newa Women) under Newa Dey Daboo. Continuing to work on women’s leadership development and empowerment, she described her candidacy as a mature form of that campaign.

Stating that the organization has been expanded from the center to the ward level in line with the federal structure, she expressed her commitment to make the organization more mobile, effective and transformative. She plans to advance women’s empowerment by linking it to the overall interests of the organization.

Prajapati has also put forward the goal of social and economic empowerment of the Newa community as well as strengthening the identity of Dey Daboo at the national and international level. At the same time, she expressed her commitment to contribute to the economic development along with the preservation of Nepal’s language, culture and heritage.

The new president was handed over the leadership at a meeting held in the capital amidst a function last week.

Newa Dey Daboohas spread its wings to 68 districts across the country, is a leading umbrella organisation of the community, which has been working for language, culture and community rights for three decades.

Newa Dey Daboo is a national level Federal body represented by different local level individual organizations of the Newars. It was constituted by a two-day National Convention held in Kathmandu in September 1995 and was established with the objective to support and promote ethnicity especially for Newar ethnic group’s identity and rights.

Being A national level organization of the Newars, with their own distinct art, culture, language, literature tradition and festivals was felt need not only for the welfare of the community but also the national pride. Newa Dey Daboo was formed to unite all the Newars in the task of national building by uplifting their art, culture, language, literature and heritage. It also envisaged to create a national platform for Newar organizations of the country with a definite direction for involving them into the main streamline of people’s governance through civic and cultural activities.

Other elected office bearers who were elected and unopposed are Satya Narayan Dangol for the post of Senior Vice President , Sita Shrestha  for Vice President (Women), Naresh Kumar Shrestha for Vice President (Koshi Province), Daksha Narayan Shrestha for Vice President (Madhesh Province), Shanta Shrestha for Vice President (Bagmati Province), Hari Kumar Shrestha for Vice President (Gandaki Province), Bijula Joshi for Vice President (Lumbini), Khagendra Bahadur Shrestha for Vice President (Karnali Province),

Rishikesh Shrestha for Vice President (Sudurpaschim Province), and Umesh Sthapit for Vice President (Kathmandu Valley.

Similarly, Shri Krishna Maharjan was elected as General Secretary while Macha Raja Maharjan Narayan Prasad Shrestha and Shrijan Shrestha secretaries in the new board. Likewise, Basanta Shrestha was elected for the post of Secretary (Women). Moreover, Basu Shrestha was elected for the Deputy General Secretary. Maaila Dangol was elected for the post of Treasurer.

New board members elected are Ram Bhakta Pradhan, Parwati Shrestha, Aruna Shrestha, Sundar Man Shrestha, Sumitra Shrestha, Ramesh Joshi, Nirmala Shrestha, Tara Shrestha, Yogita Shrestha, Lalita Pradhan, Bimala Shrestha, Ramana Shrestha, Archana Tandukar, Shobha Bajracharya, Naresh Shrestha, Debendra Pradhan, Krishnadhan Karmacharya, Rajendra Kumar Piya, Binod Shrestha, Bishnu Gopal Maharjan, Narendra Pradhan, Sudan Munikar, Dilip Shrestha and Narayan Shrestha.
