Police have arrested eight Indian nationals on charges of their involvement in online betting during the ongoing Nepal Premier League (NPL) season 2 being organized by Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) at Tribhuvan University Stadium in Kathmandu.

Those arrested by the police on Sunday include Indian nationals Raja Yadula, 31, Mahesh Babu, 35, Pandit Srinibasulu, Seikh Soyab, 20, Navin Madela,30, Mohmad Rafi Seikh, 32, Sai Kumar Tamisetti, 19, and Seikh Chand Basal, 28. All of them are the residents of Andhra Pradesh, India and currently residing in a rented house at Samakhusi, Ward No.26, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, according to the police.

According to Superintendent of Police Kaji Kumar Acharya, spokesperson for Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office of Nepal Police, they are involved in the illegal betting of NPL cricket tournament which is being organized in Kathmandu from November 17 to December 13. The police have estimated their betting amount to be NRs. 500,000. On the basis of a tip off a special team of police arrested them red-handed from Balku area, Ward No. 14, Kathmandu, near the cricket stadium. The police have also seized 15 sets of mobile phones from them. They have been handed over to the Kathmandu District Police Circle, Bhadrakali for initiating legal action under the Nepalese law against gambling as per the sub-section 4 of the section 125 of criminal civil code Act 2074 B.S.
