Deuba inaugurates waste to energy plant in Dharan

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has inaugurated a waste to energy plant installed in Dharan the other day.

The plant produces bio-gas and bi-f-ertiliser both. The plant had a schedule to run a test in last April, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and as some works remained incomplete. The plant has been inaugurated with the completion of all works.

Province 1 Minister for Physical Planning and Works Himal Karki, Dharan Sub-metropolitan City Mayor TilakRai, Deputy Mayor and CPN (UML) Central Committee member Manju Bhandari, among the officials, were present during the programme. Similarly, executive director of Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) and other officials were also present on the occasion.

Venture Waste to Energy has constructed the waste to energy plant at Panbari of Dharan sub-metropolis – 6. According to project engineer Bibek Agrawal the plant has been set up with a view to producing gas and fertiliser through processing the solid municipality waste. The waste to energy plant is of 50 metric tons capacity.This plant will be handed over to the Dharan sub-metropolis after 20 years of operations. The bio-gas produced from the plant would be supplied as fuel to the auto rickshaws operating in Dharan. The plant has the capacity of producing 2,000 kg gas and 6.5 tons of bio-fertiiser daily. That amount of gas produced is good enough for operating 400 to 500 auto rickshaws on daily basis.

Alternative Energy Promotion Centre and The World Bank had provided technical and financial support to the plant. The sub-metropolis has no investment in the project but had extended other supports and cooperation.

Similar waste to energy plants are under construction in in Kankai, Damak, Ghorahi, Birendra Nagar, Dhanagadhi, Birgunj, Itahari and other municipalities. Similarly, 293 municipalities are surveyed to be potential of installing waste to energy plants to generate biogas and fertiliser using waste generate in the municipalities. 

Besides the inaugural programme, PM Deuba took a ride to Dharan city on biogas fuelled tricycle which he remarked satisfactorily.
