Nepali politicos attached to communist movement appear to be attracted by socialism these days. The latest pledge to unite communists under the new banner of socialism by PM Dahal and senior leftist leader and former PM Madhav Nepal indicate the same.

The top leaders addressing a public function this week confirmed that their steps towards socialism would be initiated in near future. The ultimate aim, they informed, is to unite all leftists under one banner.

Both – PM Dahal and Nepal – had earlier tried in collaboration with another former PM Oli to unite leftists under the flag of Nepal Communist Party but the experiment could not last long.

This time, however, they appear more dedicated to completion of homework of uniting the leftist force in the country in a sustainable way. According to a senior leftist leader, the two leaders have learnt valuable lessons from the failed experiment. “They would use their learning as they join hands to unite Nepali communists.”

Recent elections demonstrate well how leftists could command near two third majority in parliament, provincial assemblies, and municipalities if they approach voters with one voice. They know that their division would mean defeat in polls. The factor could have guided the top leaders to try once more for the leftist unity in the country, said a media analyst.

“If leftists get united under the banner of socialism, democratic forces will also be inspired to join hands with parties having democratic ideology. The same trend could motivate new generation politicos particularly youths to be more goal focused and performance oriented. It could mark a new chapter in Nepali politics. “

Whether the old time leaders will be able to preside over the new emerging political trend is something that could not be predicted at the moment. “Much depends on how they function under their new scheme.”
