Former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai,a candidate for the House of Representatives from Gorkha – 2constituency, has withdrawn his candidacy. Bhattarai has issued a video message through social media announcing withdrawal of his candidacy.

With this now there are only three former Prime Ministers contesting the Marc 5 elections. They are UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli, contesting the general election from Jhapa 5, Pushpakamal Dahal “Prachanda” and Madhav Kumar Nepal, both contesting election as coordinator and deputy coordinator of Nepali Communist Party from Rukum east and Rautahat 1 respectively.

In the video message Bhattarai said that he decided to withdraw candidacy honouring the sentiment of the younger generation people and the voters of Gorkha district. Bhattarai had earlier filed nomination for the Parliamentary election representing Pragatisheel Lokatantrik Party. “I will shoulder the responsibility as a guardian in the national politics without limiting myself within a certain party,” said Bhattarai.

Meanwhile, issuing a press release ELection Commission has said, it is strictly monitoring the information disseminated through online news portals as well as personal social media accounts so as to avoid misuse of information that would impact the election process. We are monitoring mainly three categories of toxic information dissemination including, mis-information, dis-information and hate speech, said spokesperson at EC Narayan Prasad Bhattarai. Those violating the election code of conduct by disseminating harmful information will be brought into justice, he added.
