Although health officials had expected a slowdown in dengue virus spread in winter season, infections remained high even in the months of cold, infecting hundreds of people across the country. Data received from Epidemiology and Disease Control Division reveals that at least 1,323 people have been infected with the virus in the month of Poush starting mid-December and 853 in Magh (from mid-January to mid-February). Of them 151 required hospitalization and six of them have severe infections. One person died due to the infection during the period.
“Infections related to dengue virus has not stopped in any month for the last few years,” pointed out Dr. Yadav Chandra Ghimire, director at the division. The number of positive cases had dropped comparatively but case transmission continues in winter as well, he informed.
Altogether 41,865 cases have been reported and 15 people have died by the deadly virus in 2024. The dengue virus infection has spread in 76 districts across Nepal. According to the experts the reported cases of infection may represent only a small fraction of the total number of infection as in 90 percent of the cases symptoms are not visible.
