The Government of Nepal has initiated the process of drafting four bills to reform of the energy sector. The bill-making process has been initiated with the aim of bringing a modern and time-befitting policy regime by modifying the old laws and regulations for long-term reform and structural strengthening of the energy sector. The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation says that the work is underway to prepare bills related to water resources, renewable energy and energy efficiency, power and irrigation development and management. The said legal frameworks will help the overall management system of the energy sector, investment environment and service flow effective.
According to the ministry, work is underway on the Water Resources Bill, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Bill, the Electricity Bill, and the Irrigation Development and Management Bill. These proposed laws are expected to modernize and improve the overall structure, investment climate, and management system of the energy sector.
The ministry further noted that the draft of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Bill has already been prepared and is now in the final stage, with further discussions ongoing.
The government aims to streamline energy production, distribution, and consumption, while promoting hydropower and renewable energy development to support the country’s economic growth.
