Prime Minister Sushila Karki, addressing the concluding ceremony of NRNA global convention, appealed non-resident Nepalis across the globe to strengthen unity and actively contribute to Nepal’s development through investment, knowledge sharing and cooperation.
The 12th Global Conference and International General Assembly of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) concluded on Monday last week in Kathmandu with a 12-point declaration. The conference also elected a new executive committee under the presidentship of Dr. Hemraj Sharma.
The NRNA declaration has emphasized unity among the global Nepali community and greater investment in Nepal’s development.
The global conference held under the theme “Our Unity, Base for Prosperity”, the three-day conference brought together Nepali diaspora representatives from around the world. The declaration outlines several commitments to strengthening the role of non-resident Nepalis in Nepal’s development.
The conference called on Nepal’s government to enhance the legal framework for diaspora investment, advocating for law amendments on citizenship and foreign investments. It proposed a dedicated mechanism for non-resident Nepalis to manage investments and emphasized sectors like hydropower and tourism for collaboration, pledging to leverage global Nepali expertise for national development.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki, addressing the concluding ceremony, appealed non-resident Nepalis across the globe to strengthen unity and actively contribute to Nepal’s development through investment, knowledge sharing and cooperation.
The PM mentioned the government alone cannot achieve the country’s development goals and emphasized the need for collective efforts from Nepalis both at home and abroad.
“Development and prosperity of Nepal cannot be achieved by the government alone. Cooperation, investment, knowledge and innovation of all Nepalis – both in Nepal and abroad – are equally essential,” she said, urging the diaspora to remain connected with their motherland and participate actively in the nation’s development journey.
PM Karki expressed confidence in the NRNA’s renewed unity to enhance Nepal’s prosperity, urging non-resident Nepalis to invest for economic growth. She commended the new executive committee and hoped the NRNA would promote unity among Nepalis globally.
The global conference had unanimously elected Hem Raj Sharma as the president of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) after contenders for the post reached a consensus.
Earlier, the other contender Rabin Bajracharya announced his support for Sharma at a press conference on Sunday evening, saying he withdrew his candidacy to ensure the event remained a “Convention of Unity” and to avoid the financial burden an election would place on the association. Bajracharya agreed to serve as vice-president.
The event was attended by outgoing presidents Dr. Badri KC and Mahesh Shrestha, as well as former presidents RK Sharma, Binod Kunwar, among others. The 12th NRNA General Convention, which began on Saturday, concluded on Monday with the announcement of the new leadership.
According to the committee announcement made by the election committee, Dr. Hemraj Sharma was unanimously elected as the President. Similarly, Robin Sherchan was elected as the Senior Vice President, while nearly two dozen Vice Presidents were elected.
Furthermore, Dr. Chiranjivi Khadka was unanimously elected as the General Secretary, with 6 Deputy General Secretaries and 12 Secretaries elected. Krishna Prasad Timsina was elected as the Treasurer. Som Sapkota was elected as the Spokesperson.
