Campaigning in the context of March 5 election for the House of Representatives is being refreshed mainly as per the style of show biz and popularity-seeking style innovation. Political values and oratory narratives and speechifying at mass meetings have been pushed into the backdrop.
That is the impression of senior journalists who have been covering elections for nearly three decades in the country. “Old time political leaders are also seeking to copy the style to impress voters.”
The forthcoming poll has offered Nepali youths and traditional style politicos an opportunity to approach voters through social media.
“Some have emerged as super stars of social media capturing headlines of the day and the status of the talk of the town,” said a senior politician who was denied candidature this time by his party-boss.
With multi-front competition ahead, parties are working out their manifestoes more or less in the pattern of previous times. “Selling dream and floating high sounding slogans and pledges appear to be the rule.”
Whether that tactic will appeal most voters or not will have to be seen. Youths dominate the campaign with their voice for capacity to perform and produce result while old politicos are seeking support for one more time for their experience and past contribution to politics.
Seasoned voters expect change through the new parliament and they are closely following the poll campaign with high interest.
One voter of Kathmandu observed on Monday “this time the election will be different and it will produce a really working parliament as against talking parliament of the past.”
