Asif Ali Zardari elected as Pakistan’s 14th President

Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari has been elected as Pakistan’s 14th President on Saturday. Zardari has won a second term as Pakistan’s president, with the support of the ruling coalition in a vote by parliament and regional assemblies. Zardari secured 411 votes, while his opponent, Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who is backed by the party of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, received 181 votes.

Zardari, was the joint candidate of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) while his rival Mahmood Khan Achakzai, was the candidate of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

Zardari was elected as a member of the National Assembly in the general election held on February 8, 2024.

Zardari, who served as the president from 2008 to 2013, will also be the first civilian to be elected for the second time as president. A businessman-turned-politician, Zardari is the husband of slain Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
