Criminals committing crimes taking laws in the hand: Women Minister Regmi

The Nepal Weekly
December 13, 2022

Violence against women is increasing day by day though there are laws to punish the perpetrators, remarked Minister for Women, children and senior citizens Uma Regmi. The criminals are committing crimes taking laws in their hand, she pointed out.

Violence against woman is not going to end without changing mindset of the society and the the people at large, she pointed out. It is not just the problem of women, violence against women is in fact, the problem of the whole society and the country itself, she said. Minister Regmi was speaking at a programme titled “Identity of a civilized society: campaign against gender violence”

organized by Hami Dajubhai, a non-governmental organization in association with Ministry of Women and Children and UNICEF in Lalitpur last week. Minister Regmi underscored the need for generating social awareness to end the violence.

Since women alone cannot end violence against women, all the sections of the society should work together to achieve the goal, remarked Elke Wisch, resident representative of the UNICEF Nepal. The programme was part of a 16 day campaign against violence against women. The initiative of woman alone will not be sufficient for bringing about gender equality, remarked Sanjog Thakuri, president of Hami Dajubhai, adding all sections of the society should work in collaboration to end such type of violence.
