With the election date coming closer, voters should bear in mind that they have to vote right, well, validly and as per their conscious choice. If they do so the spirit and great idea behind adult franchise could not only be fulfilled but the latest will of Nepalis could be manifested. The same would better guide the future of the country towards good governance, social justice and meaningful economic development. If voters’ votes are valid the values, principles and mechanism developed for the whole electoral process will be accomplished. The validity of vote actually ensures real reflection of people’s will in real time. Because of understanding of the power of valid votes, and because of faith in validity of votes, democracies do their best to minimize the number of invalid votes each time they organize polls. Nepal has always emphasized it and undertaken extensive voter education prior to election. The amount of money spent in this regard ranges from 30 to 50 crore rupees in each election. Yet the number of invalid votes stands at near 5 percent. The process of educating voters is being followed this time as well through various measures undertaken by the Election Commission. All –political parties, candidates, their representatives, campaigners, election officials in the voting area and voters themselves – should play their respective role in avoiding invalid votes. Since voters’ skill, careand their way of stamping and handling ballot papers play great role in ensuring validity of votes, they should be well sensitized about it. Facilities for the same should also be ensured administratively in places where ballots are cast. Advocacy for Vote Valid! should also be emphasized as campaigners approach voters with their messaging, manifesto and mission for support. Since people rule by vote in democracies, each of their vote carries high value; each of their vote is counted. That is why sincere efforts should be made to safeguard the noble cause of valid vote.
