The government has decided to withdraw the controversial Social Media Bill which was under consideration in the Federal Parliament. A cabinet meeting held on Tuesday decided to withdraw the Bill registered by the K.P. Oli led government, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, who is also the government spokesperson, told media persons. “The government has decided to withdraw the Social Media Bill – 2025 from the federal parliament,” informed Aryal. Then Minister for Communications and Information Prithvi Subba Gurung had registered the Social Media Bill – 2025 last year. Subba had registered the Bill in the National Assembly on January 28, 2025 with a view to controlling social media sites. The Bill had drawn criticism from all quarters over its intention to control social media platforms. The then government had banned 26 social media sites even before the endorsement of the bill from the Parliament that sparked Gen Z protests. The major demands of the Gen Z youths while staging protest on September 8 and 9 were lifting ban on social media sites and checking corruption prevailing in each and every sector.
