Since last Sunday, more than 700 megawatts of electricity has been exported to India. According to data of Nepal Electricity Authority, maximum 812 megawatts of electricity was exported to India on Friday 13 July. Electricity has been exported up to 778 MW on 7 July, 748 MW on 8 July, 769 MW on 9 July, 789 MW on 10 July, 789 MW on 11 July and 812 MW on 12 July. This is the first time that more than 800 megawatts of electricity has been exported. India has approved the project so that around 700 megawatts of electricity can be exported to its market. There is a provision that electricity can be sold more than 50 percent of the approved limit. According to the authority, electricity is being exported. At present, the installed capacity of Nepal’s electricity is around 3200 megawatts. Currently, the production of electricity is about three thousand megawatts. Of that, 2300 megawatts of electricity is being consumed in Nepal. According to the authority, other electricity is being exported to India. The Authority exported electricity worth Rs 15 Arab 62 crore to India during the rainy season (May/Jun to Nov/Dec) last year. The authority has been importing and exporting electricity commercially in India since 2018 (Oct/Nov). Nepal had been importing electricity from India since 1971 to meet domestic demand.
