Seven senior leaders of the ruling Nepali Congress, who are close to party president Sher Bahadur Deuba on Monday held a meeting at Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh’s residence at Chaksibari, Kathmandu and discussed the latest political situation in the country.
They also discussed the government’s performance, party’s internal politics and ways to enhance the party’s image among the general public, according to Nepali Congress sources. The former office bearers of the party who met at Chaksibari on Monday include, Deputy PM Singh, senior leaders of the party Bimalendra Nidhi, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Shasanka Koirala, Gopal Man Singh, Prakash Sharan Mahat and Bijaya Gachhadar.
Among other things, they also discussed the issues related to constitution amendment and improving the performance of the coalition government, said a senior leader, who participated in the meeting. They raised concern regarding the lack of initiative on the part of the coalition government to take steps needed for necessary amendment of the constitution with a view to strengthening democratic republic system of the country, the leader said.
The meeting of the seven prominent leaders of the NC comes at a time when a faction of NC led by Shekhar Koirala has intensified meetings aimed at finding an alternative to the present coalition government. The meeting also reaffirmed that the present coalition must continue and there is no alternative to the present dispensation at the moment.
