Nepal Police have arrested a Chinese national and an Indian national involved in gold smuggling in two separate incidents from different parts of Kathmandu.
Chinese national Sherab Gyalmo alias Sonam Gurung has been arrested from Bouddha Tinchuli in the outskirt of Kathmandu, along with 6 kg of gold and Rs. 4.8 million in cash, according to the police. The police have also confiscated from him three sets of mobile phone and a Nepalese citizenship in his name.
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police apprehended the individual along with gold and other materials from Bouddha on Monday. The Chinese national was also linked to a larger gold scam involving 60 kg and 700 gram of gold concealed in brake shoes that was unveiled in July 2023. Police have initiated further investigation into the matter taking him into custody.
In another incident, the police have arrested 43 year old Indian national Nitin Maheshwori with 89 grams of gold from the arrival terminal gate of the Tribhuvan International Airport on Saturday evening. He was arrested during a security check as soon as he landed from Bangkok via Thai Airlines Saturday evening. The Indian national has been handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation.
