Year 2080: How was it for movies?

The Nepal Weekly
April 16, 2024

The year 2080 did not look satisfactory for the Nepali film industry. At the beginning of the year, the movie ‘Bihe Pass’ and ‘Jari’ starring actor Dayahang Rai were screened, and this year ended with the screening of the movie ‘Degree Maila’. After ‘Jari’, the ‘Mahajatra’, is considered to be the most successful movie of the year 2080. Films like Bihe Pass, Hattichap, Neephool, Dimkaha Kharab, Nango Gaau, Pardeshi-2, Pashupati Prasad-2, Bhasme Don, Rangoli, Agastya and Gorkha Warrior couldn’t get good response from the audience.

In the year 2080, the audience got to see the films produced by Nepali film directors Pradeep Bhattarai, Rambabu Gurung, Nischal Basnet and Dipendra Kumar Khanal. The films done by stars like Anmol KC and Pradeep Khadka were not screened during the year. Actors like Dayahang Rai, Bipin Karki and Saugat Malla remained in the limelight due to their outstanding performances.

It remains to be seen how ‘The Red Suitcase’ and ‘Degree Mila’ will do business in a total of 52 movies. However, at the end of the year, seeing the business of Nepali movies, no distributor could bring foreign movies to Nepal.

In the year 2080, many new faces appeared in the Nepali movie world. Ashirwad Chhetri made his debut with the movie ‘Nai Nabhannu La-6’ which was released in the first month of the year. Although his beginning was not successful professionally, he was seen as an artist with potential. Actress Pramila Karki emerged in acting through ‘Bagan’. Ioan Limbu and Simon Giri started their acting from the movie ‘Dui Kadam’. Raksha Budhathoki and Kiran Shrestha made their acting debut with the movie ‘Parkhi Basen Temelai’. Santosh Adhikari also started acting through the movie ‘Chitra’. Although the new faces on screen this year showed potential in acting, most failed to secure investment from producers.
