Nepal has for the first time exported haylage or animal feed to China. Haylage produced by Horizon International Pvt. Ltd in Chitawan district has been exported to China.
As the first consignment, 10 containers of haylage produced by the company were dispatched to China on Saturday amidst a function. Now onwards, 20 containers of animal feed will be delivered to China on daily basis, according to the company’s sources. The company aims to export 2000 million tons of animal feed to the city of Shigatse in China within a year.
According to Chang, Chief executive officer of the company, the company has purchased maize plants from farmers in and around Bharatpur Municipality of the district and processed them to make animal feed. Farmers are being provided with advanced varieties of seeds, irrigation facilities and technical support to the production.
Chang informed that there is demand for 500 containers of haylage in Shigatse region of China on daily basis. It may be recalled here that Bharatpur Metropolitan Municipality has established sister relationship with Shigatse city. The animal feed export program is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal and the Bharatpur Metropolitan Municipality. During the visit of Vice president of China to Nepal in 2022, an agreement was inked to import haylage from Nepal.
