Poudel and Nemwang field candidacy for the post of President

Nepali Congress senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel and CPN-UML leader Subhash Chandra Nemwang have filed their candidacies for the post of president on Saturday. Poudyal filed the nomination papers for the post of head of the state mainly with the backing of eight political parties including Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Centre and CPN-Unified Socialist. Other political parties supporting Poudyal’s candidacy include Rastriya Janamorcha, Janata Samajwadi Party, Lokatantrik Samajwadi Party, Nagarik Unmukti Party and Janamat Party.

Leaders Sher Bahadur Deuba, Madhav Kumar Nepal, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Ashok Kumar Rai and Abdul Khan proposed Poudyal’s name for the post whereas Mahantha Thakur, Purna Bahadur Khadka, Ranjita Shrestha, Chitra Bahadur KC and Hit Raj Pande supported his candidacy.

Simiarly, candidacy of Vicie-chairperson of CPN-UML Nemwang was proposed by UML chair KP Sharma Oli and the party’s leaders Prithvi Subba Gurung, Gikarna Raj Bista, Raghubir Mahaseth and Chhabilal BK whereas leaders of the party Yogesh Bhattarai, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Juli Kumari Mahato Mahaseth, Dil Kumari Thapa and Aman Kumar Maske supported the candidacy.

The election for the post of President will be conducted at Parliament Building premises on March 9. With the backing of eight political parties Nepali Congress candidate Poudyal is likely to succeed incumbent president Bidya Devi Bhandari. No other political parties except UML has announced to support UML’s candidacy during the presidential election.
