The weightage of votes for the presidential and vice-presidential elections will be based on the results of the 2011 census, according to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya.

Speaking after the establishment of the office of the returning officer for the presidential and vice-presidential elections at the International Convention Center in New Baneshwor on Monday, CEC Thapaliya informed that the voting weightage for the presidential and vice-presidential elections will be established based on the 2011 census.

He made it clear that the election will be conducted based on weightage of votes mentioned in Schedule 1 of the law on the election of the president and vice president based on the census conducted a decade ago.

He mentioned that the electoral law has provision for the determination of vote weightage based on the results of the recently completed census, but since the commission did not receive the official results of the 2021 census, it had to consider the 2011 census as the basis. CEC Thapaliya said that two polling stations have been arranged for the election to be held on March 9. According to the CEC, separate polling stations have been arranged for members of the House of Representatives and members of the provincial assemblies.

He said that the commission has made internal preparations to complete the voting by 3 pm on March 9 and count the votes from 4 pm and publish the results by 7 pm. If no candidate gets the majority, another election will be held on March 10, he added. Patan High Court Judge Mahesh Sharma Paudel has been appointed as the election officer for the presidential election.

Meanwhile, the office of the election officer has been established for the presidential election at the Federal Parliament building premises in New Baneshwar of Kathmandu. The office was inaugurated by Chief Election

Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya on Monday.  The election of the Vice President has been scheduled to take place on March 17. The EC would publish the final names of voters on February 22 as per the schedule.
