Corruption case troubling India’s Gandhi family

Rahul Gandhi, leader of India’s Congress party, appeared before a government agency on Monday in connection with corruption allegations.

Gandhi marched to the office of Enforcement Directorate (ED) – which fights financial crime – in national capital capital Delhi, accompanied by his sister Priyanka and hundreds of followers. Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police had detained some Congress members – including senior leaders such as Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, KC Venugopal and Ashok Gehlot – during a protest. The ED recently summoned Mr Gandhi and his mother, Congress party president Sonia Gandhi, to explain allegations of money laundering in what has come to be known as the National Herald Case.

Ms Gandhi has Covid and was admitted to a hospital on Sunday – confirmed a party spokesperson saying her condition is “stable”. The ED has issued her a fresh summons for 23 June.
