Sirjana Singh, on behalf of the ruling Nepali Congress, on Monday fielded her candidacy for the post of Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Mrs. Singh, the daughter- in-law of Ganesh Man Singh, Supreme Commander of Peoples’ Movement Part I and spouse of senior NC leader Prakash Man Singh, has been regarded as a heavy weight candidate for the post of Kathmandu Mayor. Similarly, the party decided to field candidacy of Nagesh Koirala as the Mayor of Biratnagar Metropolitan City and Chiribabu Maharjan as the Mayor of Lalitpur. Singh, who was active in student politics and Nepal Women’s Association is the first female candidate contesting election for the post of Mayor of the capital city. She was the Nepal Students’ Union unit president at Mahabouddha Nursing Campus some three and half decades ago. She had won the election as treasurer of NSU Shanker Dev Campus. Lately, she was serving as chief advisor of Nepal Women’s Association Kathmandu district committee.

Chiri Babu Maharjan had already served as Mayor of Lalitpur for the past five years and now he is contesting the election for the two consecutive terms. Maharjan is one of the successful Mayors of Nepal. He had introduced bicycle lane in Lalitpuar and done many reforms in the Metropolitan City. Other candidates contesting for the post are Keshav Sthapit from CPN-UML and Suman Sayami, an independent candidate. “I will manage and make this Kathmandu City as a housewife manages her house,” remarked Sirjana while filing nomination papers at City Hall on Monday. “I will dedicate to making historic city clean, beautiful, well managed and also ensure safety of women,” she said. “I will immediately formulate short term and long term plans for the metropolis and make people feel something different within the next five years,” claimed Sirjana.
