Annapurna Cable Car is a new mode of transportation linking Phewa lake side to Sarangkot hill in Pokhara. The two most famous tourist destinations of Pokhara have been connected the cable car. The cable car system is expected to serve as a tourist attraction.
The cable car was tested by Japanese technicians recently, and softly opened for operation on Friday. The system has 18 gondolas. Seventeen gondolas are to carry eight passengers in each and one gondola will be used to transporting goods.18 more gondolas may be added in future to serve more passengers.
The cable car takes passengers on a 2.3 kilometre travel from Sadibagar, on the bank of the Phewa Lake, to the Sarangkot Hill in eight minutes. The passenger will enjoy viewing of mountains, lakes and green forests of Pokhara. The cable car can serve 1,500 people an hour.
The two stations – top station and bottom station – have restaurants and parking, gardens, ticket counters and restrooms.
A team of Pokhara based entrepreneurs laid the foundation stone for the cable car in 2017 aiming to complete construction in a year and a half.
Cost of all construction for the project was initially expected to be Rs. 900 million but ended at costing Rs. 2 billion, the company has stated.
Kalu Gurung, who is also the chairman of Annapurna Cable Car Company, and other Nepali businessmen invested 75 per cent of the total budget, former Japanese citizen late Takashi Miyahara invested 15 per cent and locals invested 10 per cent. The system was built by Chitawan Co-E Group.
The equipment and technology connected to the cable car is said to be modern in recent times. Japan’s ‘Nippon Cable’ company has designed and developed the technology
Annapurna Cable Car Company has fixed a fare of Rs 700 for Nepali nationals, Rs 800 for tourists from SAARC countries and Rs 900 for third country nationals. A 50 percent discount will be provided to senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
