Two votes: one key message

Nepali voters have quietly but boldly changed the political landscape of the country through two votes – one direct and the other proportionate but focused on one choice – the RSP,the champion of 2026 parliamentary election.
“The people’s choice could be explained, in the context of Nepali politics, as more than a great revolution. It represents the collective will of the Gen Z revolution in a clear-cut manner,” noted a former parliamentarian.
“Because of this, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), founded in 2022,displaced four powerful legacy parties and their leadership Nepali Congress, Communist parties (CPN UML and Maoists), Madhesh-centric parties and Rastriya Prajatantra Party from the space they occupied prominently in different times over past 35 years.
“The RSP victory in this election reflects well the frustration that people have because of transactional politics through which three leaders Deuba, Oli and Prachanda controlled, in a musical chair modality, the power and state-resources for decades. Their failure to deliver had betrayed people,” said a senior politician in Kathmandu.
The way the RSP could challenge the cadre-based or active-member-based parties is in itself a great achievement, opined a senior media analyst.
“Now the leaders who drive government and party should display skill in governance, delivery of services, mobilization of party and acting as per the RSP manifesto,” observed a civil society leader.
