The Special General Convention of the Nepali Congress that kicked off at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu on Sunday, that was originally meant for two days, has been extended till Tuesday. According to the party’s sources, the meeting has been extended as time was insufficient to discuss the political papers presented by general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma.
In the political papers, general secretaries Thapa and Sharma have tried to address the concerns shown by the Gen Z youths during their movement in September such as strengthening anti-corruption mechanism, transparency and good governance. They have also suggested ways to transform and revamp the party organization to remake its image that was tarnished image during the Gen Z movement.
The delegates expressed their opinion mainly in four key issues during the deliberations: contemporary politics, policy and leadership of the party, reforms in governance and amendment to the statute of the party.
More than 58 percent or 2,600 general convention delegates are participating in the Special General Convention. The party may go for electing a new leadership during Tuesday’s meeting, a senior leader of the party said. Efforts are being made to find a middle way, he said adding, if that is not possible we will go for electing new leadership by dissolving the central working committee of the party.
There are also reports about Sher Bahadur Deuba expressing his readiness to discuss the matter with general secretaries Thapa and Sharma to save the party from being split. There are claims and counter-claims from the establishment and rival sides. Those in favour of Special General Convention said that they can choose a new working committee by dissolving the old one. However, leaders close to Deuba faction claimed that any decision taken during the Special Convention will be illegal. Meanwhile, the party’s establishment has called for central committee meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss the current developments.
