
The 116th International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8 March. The day is dedicated to reflecting on the achievements of ordinary women who have made an extraordinary impact in their countries and communities, and to celebrate the contributions of women all around the world. International Women’s Day to promote the full realisation of women’s rights and gender equality.
“Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” was the theme for IWD 2026.
Moreover, in Nepal, the day is a time to reflect on the progress the country has made towards gender equality, call for change and celebrate the numerous acts of courage and determination made by ordinary Nepali women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
President Ramchandra Paudel, has extended his best wishes to all Nepali women at home and aboard on the occasion of International Women’s Day for peace, prosperity and happiness.
Delivering a message on this occasion, President Paudel called upon everyone concerned to contribute from their respective fields to end all forms of violence, discrimination and opression against women.

He highlighted the need to organise more effective and creative programmes to eliminate harmful practices that persist in society in the name of tradition, which have contributed to rising incidents of physical and psychological violence against adolescent girls and women.
“As women make up half of the population, empowering them will lead the entire family, society and the nation towards prosperity. Therefore, special attention must be given to this matter,” he added.
Stating the International Women’s Day is celebrated to honour the economic, political and social achievements of women working in various sectors around the world.
It also aims to expand women’s access to technology, strengthen women’s empowerment, eliminate gender inequality and violence, educate women and make them self-reliant, and ensure they receive the respect they deserve, he added.
To achieve the goals of gender equality and women’s empowerment, women must be ensured equal access to education, health services, employment, policy-making and decision-making processes, as well as politics and all other sectors of the state, he added.
He hoped that this day will inspire all of us to become more sensitive towards women’s rights, equality, empowerment and dignity, and provide renewed energy, enthusiasm and motivation to work in this direction.
Similarly, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has extended his best wishes to all Nepali women at home and abroad on the occasion of International Women’s Day, wishing them happiness, peace, prosperity, good health and continued progress.
In a message issued on Saturday, the Vice President said the day serves as an important platform to advocate for women’s empowerment, equality, education, health and dignified participation in society. He stressed the need to end discrimination, violence and unjust practices against women.
On the occasion, Civil Unification Society has organised an event to award 37 women leaders active in different fields.

Those awarded amidst a special function held in the capital on Saturday include first woman justice of Nepal Sharada Shrestha, Director of Nepal Republic Media Gyawali, Co-Registrar at the Supreme Court Mamata Khanal, Executive Director of Rastriya Banijya Bank Saraswati Adhikari, Nepal Telecom Manager Rita Dangol and educationist Urmila Lama.
Addressing the function, Vice Chairperson of National Assembly Sashi Kala Dahal said the award was the recognition of their contribution to bring about gender equality and uplifting the lives of women in Nepal. “We have been working toward ending gender-based discrimination in Nepal. But various rights guaranteed by the constitution on woman are yet to come into the implementation,” said Vice Chairperson Dahal.
Chairperson of Civil Unification Society, Sita Ram Karki said they have been organizing similar kinds of programs to recognize the contribution made by women in different sectors in Nepal. He said that the Society had been raising its voice for the cause of women’s rights since decades.
