The incidents relating to violations of press freedom have increased by three fold in Nepal in 2025 as compared to the previous year. According to a report released by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ), 139 incidents of violation of press freedom have been recorded in the year 2025. During the period 118 journalists and 31 media houses were affected during various movements while two journalists lost their lives while working. In 2024, 60 such incidents have been recorded where as 58 incidents of violation of press freedom were recorded in 2023. As compared to the previous year, the incidents of violations of press freedom had increased by three fold in 2025, FNJ states.

Lawlessness in the incidents relating to crime against journalists, weakening financial resources among media houses and professional insecurity as well as physical threat against journalists have added more challenge to the press freedom, according to the FNJ statement.

Undemocratic act of the K.P. Oli led government to ban 26 social media sites was also one of the set back experienced by media sector during the year. During the various movements in 2025, Rs. 600 million worth institutional loss to media houses and Rs. 180 million worth personal property damage of media persons were also reported in the year. Five journalists sustained bullet injuries during the September’s Gen Z movement, said the statement issued by the FNJ.
