
A government committee tasked to assess the damage life and property during the Gen Z movement, concluded in total 77 people were killed and property worth Rs. 84.45 were damaged during the two day movement on September 8 and 9.
The committee on Thursday presented the detail report of damage caused to public and private property during the agitation as well as a plan for the reconstruction of public infrastructure to Prime Minister Sushila Karki, according to sources at the Prime Minister’s office.
The committee’s coordinator, Rabilal Pantha presented a summary of the report to the Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on TUhrsday. The committee formed through a cabinet decision on September 21, 2025 completed its task within 75 days. It found that all seven provinces recorded damage during the movement, affecting 54 out of a total of 77districts districts and 262 local units.
The movement resulted in a total of 77 deaths—20 on September 8, 37 on September 9 and another 20 in the days that followed. A total of 2,429 people were injured, of which 17 were below 13 years of age, while 1,433 were between 13 and 28.
The committee’s concludes that a total of physical damage amounting to Rs84.45 billion was caused during the movement. A total of 2,168 government and public bodies were affected, with 2,671 buildings damaged—amounting to an estimated loss of Rs39.31 billion, according to the report.
According to the document, in total 12,659 vehicles were damaged, resulting in losses worth Rs12.93 billion. Losses in the government and public sector stand at Rs44.93 billion, those in the private sector at Rs33.54 billion, and losses in community and other sectors at Rs5.97 billion.
The committee has also presented a reconstruction action plan with an estimated cost of Rs36.30 billion for rebuilding the damaged government and public sector structures.
