Chairman of CPN-UML and ousted Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli on Sunday furnished a written statement to the probe commission formed to investigate the incidents relating to the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9.

The commission on Sunday sent a letter to the former Prime Minister at his residence for his clarification regarding the excessive use of force during the Gen Z movement in which 77 people including 22 Gen Z protesters were killed and he furnished a written reply on the same day.

“The commission sent a letter to Oli’s current residence at Gundu of Bhaktapur district, 11 km East of Kathmandu, and got a written response from him on the same day,” Bigyan Raj Sharma, spokesperson of the commission told PTI over phone. The commission had given the former Prime Minister seven days to furnish the reply. He, however, did not give any details about Oli’s statement.

The commission completed recording statement of former home minister Ramesh Lekhak regarding the same incident last week.

The government had formed a three-member inquiry commission, led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, to probe allegations of use of excessive force and rights violations during the youth-led Gen Z protests against corruption, nepotism and bad governance prevailing in the country. A total of 77 people lost their lives during the Gen Z protests. Of them 22 were killed on the first day, September 8, of the protests.

Ex-PM Oli earlier, said he would not give any clarification to the prob commission, as he didnt recognize its legitimacy. Gen Z protesters were demanding action against those involved in the excessive use of force including then Prime Minister Oli and then Home Minister Lekhak.

Oli’s travel restriction removed

Travel restrictions imposed on ousted Prime Minister and chair of CPN – UML K.P. Sharma Oli has been removed. A day after then Prime Minister Oli furnished written reply to the high level probe commission formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9, the travel restrictions imposed on Oli has been lifted, according to the commission. At least 77 people were killed during the two day movement organized by Gen Z youths of Nepal against corruption and ban on social media sites. A meeting of the commission to investigate the excessive use of force by the government during the Gen Z movement, took a decision to this effect on Monday, according to Bigyan Raj Sharma, spokesperson of the commission.

Earlier, the commission had restricted Oli from traveling abroad or leaving the Kathmandu Valley without permission. A team from the probe commission on Sunday visited Oli’s residence in Gundu of Bhaktapur district and handed him a letter consisting of around four dozen questions. The commission received a written statements from the former Prime Minister on the same day.
