Election Commission submits the final report of the HoR election to the president

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday presented the final report of the House of Representatives elections held on March 5 to President Ramchandra Paudel.

Ram Prasad Bhandari, officiating chief election commissioner, presented the report to the President at a special ceremony organised at the Office of the President, Shital Niwas, according to a statement issued by the EC.

Under the first past the post (FPTP) system 164 members from six political parties and one independent were elected to the Lower House. Similarly, under the proportionate voting, 110 members were elected from six political parties.

Of the total number of 275 elected members of the HoR 179 are men and 96 were women.

During the election a total of 18,903,689 voters were eligible to cast their votes. Around 60 percent votes were caste during the election.

Receiving the report from the Election Commission, President Paudel expressed satisfaction over the successful conclusion of the polls, noting that they were conducted with dedication and integrity despite “difficult and complex circumstances”.

“By conducting the House of Representatives elections on March 5 in a free, fair and fearless environment, the commission has successfully fulfilled its constitutional mandate,” the head of state said. “I feel this has bolstered public trust in the Election Commission and the electoral system, further strengthening our democracy.”

In the election, Rastriya Swatantra Party emerged victorious with securing 182 seats followed by Nepali Congress with 38 seats, CPN-UML 25, Nepali Communist Party 17, Shram Sanskriti Party 7 and Rastriya Prajatantra Party 5 seats.

The submission marks the formal conclusion of the general elections, clearing the way for the President to initiate the process of formation of the new government under Article 76 (1) of the Constitution.
