The Election Commission has published the schedule for House of Representatives Election scheduled to be held on January 20. As per the schedule, the candidates will file nomination papers on January 20, 2026. The aspiring candidates will have to file nomination for the HoR election from 10 am to 6 pm on January 20, according to a notice published by the Election Commission.

The list of the candidates will be published on the same day evening after 5 pm. The time for registering protest against any candidate is fixed at 10 am on January 21 till 3 pm on the same date.

The verified list of candidates after evaluating the protests will be published in the next day or January 22. Those wishing to withdraw their candidacy can withdraw on January 23 till 1 pm. The final list of candidates will then be published on the same day within 3 pm and the election symbol will be officially allotted to the candidates on the same day.

The election will be held on March 5, 2026. The voting will start at 7 am and ends at 5 pm, according to the Election Commission.

As per the Nepalese constitution 165 members of the House of Representatives are elected through first past the post procedure or direct method. However, remaining 110 members are elected on the basis of proportionate voting. The total number of HoR seat is 275.seats.

Meanwhile Nepali Communist Party (NCP) led by former Maoist chief Pushpakamal Dahal “Prachanda,” as coordinator has been officially registered at the Election Commission on Friday. The new party was formed by merging at least 10 smaller political parties with CPN-Maoist Centre headed by former Prime Minister Prachanda. Former PM Madhav Kumar Nepal, who was also the chair of CPN-Unified Socialist is the co-coordinator of the new party.

The party received official registration certification from the Election Commission on Friday. The NCP formed with the unification of around a dozen smaller communist parties is set to give a big challenge to the largest communist party (CPN-UML) led by deposed Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. With the announcement of fresh election date Nepal is witnessing a wave of new party formation, realignment and merger among different parties. At least 20 new political parties have applied for registration with the Election Commission in this fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has extended the deadline for registration of new voters by five days. The deadline, set to expire on Nov. 16 has been extended to November 21 as daily thousands of Gen Z youths have been registering their names in the voters list.
