Nepal Police have given clean cheat to the controversial TOB (Tibetan Original Brother/Blood) group for their alleged link to either pro-Tibetan activities or vandalism during September’s Gen Z protests. After interrogating youths associated with TOB including Tenzing Dawa Lama, who became controversial during the Gen Z movement on September 8 at Naya Baneshwor, the police have thoroughly investigated the matter.
TOB is a bikers’ group formed on June 10, 2024 aimed at organizing motorbike tours, gatherings, partying and getting involved in social works, according to the Kathmandu District Police Circle. Although the group has 57 members only 25 of them regularly gather and on September 8, during the Gen Z movement, around 20 youths mostly college boys, aged between 16 and 20 had reached Bijulibazar area on their bullet bikes to participate in the agitation, informed SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, who is also the spokesperson for Kathmandu District Police.
The boys were wearing T-shirts with the logo of TOB letters along with Dragon and a bridge. The dragon symbolizes warier while bridge symbolizes friendship and peace, he said. Tenzing is a cross between Tibetan origin and Nepali origin parents, who was brought up during the childhood by his grandfather. After the death of his grandfather he is living with his aunty. There is no information about his father and mother, only what is revealed is that one of his parents is of Tibetan origin.
They were briefly present during the first day of the protest and after one of the youths had his face wounded by a stone thrown by some one, they left Nayabaneshwor area on their bike, according to the police. The only mistake Tenzing committed was he shouted “We want back our land,” at that time for which he had already apologized, spokesperson Bhattarai added.
After hearing about the GenZ protests through social media sites, they decided to participate and circulated among the members regarding the programme. They had gathered at a coffee shop at Bouddha before heading towards Bijulibazaar to participate in the protest, according to the police.
Bhattarai also made it clear that the video showing pistol along with the TOB youths’ bike rally in the social media was taken some six months back during a music video shooting and the pistol was just a toy, not real one. They mostly use Instagram and Whatsapp for communication among the members.
Surendra Gurung, also known as ‘Hakim’ linked with the group is their role model. The police have seized 13 Bullet bikes and one Pulsar from them during the investigation. The bikes will be returned soon in the presence of their parents, SP Bhattarai added.
The group was not involved in any kind of demonstration or vandalism or arson during the second day of the agitation, clarified the police.
However, the police said they will further investigate into the group’s possible involvement in other suspicious activities before releasing them. Among some of the TOB members detained by the police Tenzing is still in custody for further investigation, according to the police.
