Election climate: smart warm-up

Nepal is currently witnessing a smart warm-up of general election climate to open a new era in Nepali politics. Gen Z members, activists and leaders appear contemplating to participate in it with fresh fervor under the banner of new political parties.

The recent Gen Z revolution opened a way to the March 5, 2026 (Falgun 21, 2082) polls for refreshing the House of Representatives. The Election Commission has begun updating voters’ list, election procedures, party registration works etc. with high speed.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who has a movement-mandate to complete the election, expressed in her latest Chhath 2082 festival message of greetings determination to finish the task on time.

Her observation that “Even if one has certain stances or grievances, presenting them peacefully to win the support of the general public and getting them approved through election is the best method of democracy” is remarkable.

Those who still do not see polls coming in five months, the advisory from former Chief Justice and current Executive-chief could serve as timely reminder. The same could inspire them to hurry up ways to go to polls.

Although a few politicos originally expressed doubt over having general election in such a short time – six months-, most have already begun restructuring their party organizations and planning list of candidates.

Poll analysts predict this time the country will see a vast change in electioneering, candidature, political party- slogans, and the manifestoes. “Voters, which would include Gen Z and possibly Nepalis abroad, will have a different feel of voting this time. Traditionally seen faces may simply go missing in the poll panorama.”

Social media would be used extensively and most women and marginalized youths will get opportunities to compete. The media – Print, TV, Radio and Online – will also be used, widely as usual, but in a different style and package, say experts.
