The Nepal Weekly With the Gen Z revolution resulting successfully in sea-change in Nepali power politics and governance structure, the path forward is: moving for election to democratically stabilize politics and governance. Thanks to the great sacrifice of fresh youths of Gen Z and meaningful contribution of the same generation, the country has once again been alert about making government accountable, transparent and functional. The political parties which contributed most to the cause of democracy forgot their duty to offer examples of fair and just, transparent and accountable governance while ruling the country for the past 35 years. Their concentration on self interest and abuse of authority and lack of performance while in government made people frustrated. The same resulted in disconnect between the party-government and the people in general. People in general and youths in particular felt betrayed over the country’s scenario of one section of politicians enjoying luxurious comfortable life and the rest suffering in poverty, anxiety and unemployment. The way top leaders of three leading parties shared government power and handled country’s resources for their personal benefit made people specially disappointed. The same motivated Gen Z youths to move against corruption and bad governance. As the revolution began the then government first thought of suppressing it with force; it resulted in deaths of 19 fresh youths on the first day. It was something people could not tolerate; and the Gen Z intensified its fight. The same resulted in huge human loss and property. The government could not face it and gave way; thanks to the facilitation from Nepal Army peace was restored and political process of talk between the President and representatives of Gen Z revolution produced an Interim government under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. The Interim government decided to dissolve the House of Representatives elected some two and half years ago and seek mid-term election. Prime Minister Karki has pledged that her government would focus on holding the parliamentary poll and hand over power to the politicos elected by the people. The Gen Z revolution has taught important lessons for the non-performing political parties and their old generation leadership. The parties should now, as the President and the Prime Minister emphasized, concentrate on forthcoming general election and seek fresh mandate from the people in a democratic way.
