Priority of the interim government and wishlist

The Nepal Weekly
September 16, 2025

Nepal has recently witnessed a massive movement against corruption, social media interruption and some other vital issues concerned to commoners’ life, mainly focused on future of youths. The movement turned the Government led by K. P. Sharma Oli.

The demonstration caused loss of reportedly 72 individuals and properties of private sector worth 240 billion rupees. The tourism sector has suffered a loss of NRs 25 billion while automobile sector faced a damage of NRs 15 billion.

As a result, the Government under Prime Minister Sushila Karki has been formed to hold elections for the Parliament on 5th March, 2026. The former chief justice of the Supreme Court who become Interim Prime Minister according to Gen Z protestors choice PM Karki became the first Lady PM of the country. She also has a record of serving female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

PM Karki has started working from a newly set office as the Prime Minister’s Office. The former Office of the Prime Minister at the main building of Singhadurbar has been ruined by fire put during the demonstration. The new office has been set in the building constructed for Ministry of Home Affairs.

Singhadurbar which was built in 1908 by Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, was designed by two Nepali architects- Kumar Narsingh Rana and Kishor Narsingh Rana. At the time, the cost of the structure at 5 million rupees.

The palace was built on 50 hectares of manicured lawns and seven inter-connected courtyards. With over 1,000 rooms, Singhadurbar was considered one of the largest palaces in South Asia, a true symbol of the Rana regime’s wealth and power.

Originally built as a residence as well as an administrative command centre. Later, the palace was turned to the country’s administration centre.

On July 9, 1973, the palace witnessed a devastating fire. Most parts of the palace were destroyed, leaving only the front courtyard intact and usable. What was once a sprawling palace with endless corridors and courtyards was reduced to fragments.

Later, a number of buildings were constructed for the use of different ministries and offices in the Singhadurbar premises.

Experts and professionals have lodged a number of advises and recommendations to immediate actions. That includes strong action against corruption by political personalities and government staffers and punish them accordingly.

The advises and recommendations include strong actions against corrupt leaders and government staffers at all levels, keep up the motions of the Gen Z demonstration, fair election on time and hand over elected winning party.

The PM has expressed commitments aligned as stated above. She also has announced cash support to the families who lost life in the demonstration. She has mentioned that the government will be supporting to private sector business community and industries. Moreover, there are some vital aspects that the governments in the past announced programmes to support agriculture sector and employment generating entrepreneurships. But, budgets go drained to the other than real beneficiaries.

Any individual can see that corruption if brought down to zero, industries and business entrepreneurships will be extended to the expectable extent. That will contribute to lower the cost of management, cost of raw materials and other business commodities. That will be instrumental in creating more employments in the country and the employer will be able to give good salary to the workers. So as a good ecosystem will share benefits to all.

The agriculture sector is more crucial to attention. The country requires agricultural products in quality and quantity both. But farmers are not getting benefits. So they need to be supported for their livelihood including cash benefits, health facilities, education facilities and opportunities for uplifting living quality. Modern machines, technology and knowledge can help them achieve the target. Here the government support will be instrumental in availing good seeds, fertilisers preferably organic and produced in the country, guarantee of selling products in good price so as they would be in profit.

Therefore, the government may be appreciated in extending support to industries and business communities. Likewise, support to farmers can be instrumental in reducing import of food grains, fruits and other food items.

Climate issues, environment and renewable energy policies may not need big changes but effectiveness for better impact should be taken into consideration. Extending priority form hydropower technology to other technologies such as Solar electricity should be an important move.

Likewise, after good infrastructures and service quality tourism industry, peaceful and stable situation is a most preferred component. This smokeless industry provides employment opportunities. Therefore, this industry need to be protected by the government. The foreigner visiting Nepal should feel safe even in hard time and election period.

Although the interim government is responsible for a major assignment – hold elections safely, fairly and on time, people are showing their wishlist that needs years to get accomplished, not within the six months period. So as people, recommend the interim government to be able to create environment for constitutional provision for directly elected the head of government as an executive chief, and barring parliamentarians to be minister, proportional representation in the parliament, dissolving Provincial governments, local level elections in non-partisan basis, right to recall and so many things.

Therefore, the interim government can create strong ground for country’s future of self-reliance to witness the effect in the future – beyond its mandated time frame.
