The exchange of clean banknotes for Dashain began on Sunday and will continue until Ashoj 10.
People can exchange notes at the Currency Management Department of Nepal Rastra Bank in Thapathali, as well as at its provincial offices in Biratnagar, Janakpur, Birgunj, Pokhara, Siddharthanagar, Nepalgunj, and Dhangadhi. Most commercial banks are also providing this facility, and customers can contact their banks to find the nearest location for the service.
In the past, Rastra Bank used to distribute completely new notes during Dashain. However, in recent years it has been providing only clean notes. Like last year, individuals can exchange up to Rs. 18,500 in clean notes—one bundle each of Rs. 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 denominations. A small quantity of new notes of lower denominations will also be available.
There was initial uncertainty about whether the exchange would begin on time due to the country’s political transition. But Rastra Bank confirmed that since the physical infrastructure of banks and financial institutions has not been severely affected, the exchange has started as scheduled.
Rastra Bank introduced the practice of distributing clean notes last year and has continued it this year. The decision to stop issuing brand-new notes was made to reduce costs. According to Rastra Bank, providing clean notes instead of new ones saves nearly 1 Arab 30 crore rupees annually.
