Nepalese and Tibetan officials held a bilateral meeting related to border security in Zhangmu, Tibet bordering Sindhupalcowk district of Nepal on August 1.
During the “counterpart meeting” issues related to facilitating trade between the two countries, controlling illegal border trade and strengthening border security mainly featured, according to Assistant Chief District Officer of Sindhupalchowk, Ganesh Nepali.
The meeting was attended by local authorities and chiefs of local security agencies. The Nepalese side of the delegation was led by Chief District Officer of Sindhupalchowk Kiran Thapa.
“The talks covered a wide range of issues such as illegal trade, border security and criminal activities in the border area,” he pointed out. “Controlling illegal trade, checking unauthorized movement in the border, controlling criminal activities in the border, trade facilitation and exchange of information between the two sides, mainly featured during the meeting” informed Assistant CDO Nepali without much elaborating.
The meeting took place weeks after a massive flood swept away the Miteri Bridge that linked Nepal and Tibet, which is also part of a major trading point between Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal and Tibet.
China last month assured support to Nepal for reconstructing infrastructure damaged by recent floods in Rasuwa district and restoring customs operations. The Nepal-China Friendship Bridge, connecting the two nations, along with several hydropower projects and a dry port, was severely damaged by flash floods that struck Rasuwa on July 8, 2025.
The assurance came during a meeting between Nepal’s Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel and a Chinese delegation led by Chen Xiaodong, Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) on July 21 at the Finance Ministry here.
