The Nepal Weekly Some districts of the Madhesh Province in southern Nepal, which had been reeling under a prolonged drought during the monsoon season, witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
There are eight districts in the Madhes Province, which were badly affected by drought for more than a month seriously affecting the farmers, majority of whom rely on rainfall for their paddy plantation.
Saptari, Siraha, Rautahat and Sarlahi districts experienced light to medium rainfall in the past 24 hours, while Dhanusha, Mahottari and Bara received heavy rainfall, according to Bibhuti Pokharel, spokesperson at the meteorological division.
As per measurements taken in Saturday morning, Tulsi Center in Dhanusha district recorded 63.8 mm of rainfall, while Hardinath in the same district received 51 mm. Similarly, Gaur in Rautahat recorded 44.6 mm, and Amlekhgunj in Bara received 46.4 mm of rainfall.
Similarly, Molgaun centre of Sarlahi has 37.6 mm rainfall, Parwanipur of the district has 25.8mm. Similarly, Gaurigaun of Mahottari has 32.4 mm, Lahan of Siraha has 7.2 mm and Kalyanpurof Saptari has 2.6 mm rainfall. However, there was no rainfall in Parsa district in the past 24 hours.
The farmers of the Madhes Province have felt a type of relief with the downpour since Friday. The farmers here have begun to regain hope for their rice plantation. Until now only 35 percent of paddy plantation was complete in the Madhes Province. The eight districts of Madhes accounts for more than 16 percent of rice production in the country. The prolonged lack of rainfall had left parts of Madhesh drought-hit areas, prompting the government to declare them crisis-hit areas.
