Mahanagar Yatayat Private Limited has introduced12 electric buses to operate in the Kathmandu Valley.
Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal launched the electric bus service on 17 July amidst a function.
Inaugurating the electric bus service, Minister Dahal expressed the view that Nepal has entered the era of electric vehicles with the development of the road network. He stated that there has been significant progress in road infrastructure development in recent years.
Minister Dahal further said that such an organized and modern passenger service network should be expanded which can benefit general people mainly.
Keshav Kumar Sharma, Secretary at the Ministry said that the use of electric vehicles is increasing rapidly in Nepal. So as electric vehicle factory in Nepal has been a need to cater the needs.
Chairman of Mahanagar Yatayat Private Limited Santosh Khatiwada said that the company started operating services in the Kathmandu Valley with 39 diesel buses in 2015.Now it owns a total of 89 buses operating on various routes in the valley, including the ring road.
He also said that Mahanagar Yatayat is preparing to issue primary shares soon.
Mahanagar Yatayat already operates bus services from Chandragiri and Thankot to Banepa and Dhulikhel. The company aims to contribute to a healthier environment and the sustainable development of urban transport.
The electric buses Mahanagar Yatayat has purchased are supplied by Shasheela Motors, the authorized distributor of Chery & Wanda, one of the electric bus manufacturers in China.
The 33-seater buses are fully electric and built with modern features, including a 430 mm wheelbase, 25% gradeability, and a top speed of 69 km/h. Each bus accommodates 68 passengers, powered by a 120/240 kW motor and a 144.97 kWh CATL battery system. They are equipped with advanced braking and suspension systems for urban transport.
The electric buses are 8.65 meters long and total passenger capacity is of 67, with comfortable seating for 32 passengers and standing space for up to 35 passengers. The bus is equipped with state-of-the-art folding adjustable comfortable seats. The company has stated that all activities in the bus can be monitored through seven CCTV cameras on a screen provided in the driver’s cabin. The operating company says that these buses will be used on the Ring Road route.
