For the first time, sex change surgery has been successfully conducted in Nepal at Teaching Hospital Maharajgunj in Kathmandu.

The Chief of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Plastic Surgery Department, Professor Dr. Jayan Man Shrestha, told this to media persons on Sunday during a press conference. He informed the media that the first sex reassignment surgery (Male to Female) has been conducted successfully.

According to Dr. Shrestha a 25-year-old transgender person from Janakpur district has changed the gender through surgery. Earlier, Nepalese wishing to sex change surgery had to go to hospitals in Bangkok and other countries bearing high costs.

According to Dr. Shrestha, by using needed hormones, female physical organ has been restructured during the surgery.

Now interested Nepalese can change their sex within the country, avoiding the expensive surgery in foreign countries. In Nepal, the cost for sex change surgery is estimated between NRs. 150,000 and 200,000.

Leading third gender activist and former Member of Parliament Sunil Babu Panta, however demanded that clear cut policy must be formulated regarding the matter. The main question in this regard is defining the identity, whether to call such a trans-gender woman, a woman or third gender, he pointed out.
