Nepal Compost Awareness Week 2082 kicked off with rally featuring banners and active participation of experts, professionals and students. Although it was a rainy morning, the rally was a grand success under the leadership of former Minister for Environmental and Science and Technology Er. Ganesh Shah, while the Nepal Compost Consortium is facilitating the week-long campaign.
The campaign aims to bring together businesses, experts, activists, local governments, academic institutions, and technical organizations like WHO to promote composting and sustainable waste management.
Compost awareness week has been globally observed for the past 26 years as International Compost Awareness Week. It is celebrated during the second week of May. Aligning with this movement, Nepal is hosting its first national compost week from May 4 – 9, 2025 with variety of events. This year’s theme, “For a Better Planet, Start Composting,” encourages individuals and institutions to responsibly manage organic waste and participate in compost production. Week-long activities include awareness campaigns, compost exhibitions, competitions, workshops, school dialogues, field visits, and compost plant tours. Likewise, the weeklong programme will be conducted throughout the week in various parts of the country, including Kathmandu, in collaboration with schools, universities, local levels, community organizations, and environmentally friendly businesses.
Moreover, the organizers believe that the programme will motivate every citizen to responsibly manage their organic waste, from home to office, school to industry, and engage in compost production. Compost Awareness Week has been held internationally for the past 26 years, but this is the first time it is being held in Nepal.
International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry. It is celebrated during the first full week of May throughout the US and internationally. The goal of ICAW is to work together to raise public awareness on why we all should be composting our organics and using compost to create healthier soil. The program includes a poster contest held in the fall and thousands of activities and events held during the week in May. Throughout the week of ICAW, events are held all over the country and the world with communities, schools, governments and businesses planning different activities to encourage and celebrate composting – all types of composting – from backyard to large–scale.
