Nepal has observed the 19th Lokatantra Diwas or Democracy Day by organizing various programmes including offering tributes to the martyrs who sacrificed their life in the struggle to establish.
The Democracy Day is observed in commemoration of the historic event when the autocratic regime of them King came to an end after the reinstatement of dissolved parliament.
It may be noted that the autocratic regime was abolished on 24 April 2006 or Baisakh 11 Baisakh 2063 B.S, with the success of the People’s Movement -II that ended autocratic regime of the then King.
On the day, former King Gyanendra Shah through a proclamation reinstated the dissolved House of Representatives (HoR) in accordance with the public sentiment expressed through the people’s movement. “Keeping in mind the fact that the source of state power rests on the Nepali people and the sovereignty and state power of Nepal lies with the Nepali people,” he announced.
Two year’s later in May 28, 2008, the Parliament through a declaration abolished the 240 year old institution of monarchy and declared Nepal a secular federal, democratic republic.
Meanwhile, extending best wishes on the occasion of democracy day, the leaders of various political parties have underscored the need for all forces to unite for the prosperity of the country.
CPN-UML on Thursday organized a Youth Celebration programme at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu to mark the democracy day as the day for victory of the Nepalese people. More than 10,000 youths below the age o 40 gathered at Bhrikutimandap to take part in the celebrations featuring music concert, dance, cultural icons representing different ethnicity, language and customs, food festivals and stalls to showcase goods made by youths. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli briefly address the celebrations.
