The opposition party lawmakers on Monday slammed the government for suppressing the peaceful protests organized by school teachers.
During the emergency session of the House of Representatives on Monday, they criticized the government for resorting to suppression instead of inking a deal with the agitating teachers to end the agitation.
Lawmaker Janardan Sharma of the CPN (Maoist Centre) condemned the government for suppressing teachers who were staging peaceful protests. The teachers were compelled to protest because a new law had not been enacted in line with the constitution, he remarked.
Sharma underscored that it was inappropriate for the government to resort to repression instead of addressing the genuine demands of the teachers for the new law.
Similarly, Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sumana Shrestha opposed the state’s repression against teachers and underscored the need to immediately address the legitimate demands of the teachers.
During the protest organized by the teachers in the capital on Sunday, police clashed with the protestors who were pressing for the implementation of the School Education Act. At least 27 teachers and school staff and a journalist were injured in the police action. The peaceful protests launched by the school teachers to press for their demands relating to reforms in school education and hiking their pays and perks reached 27th day on Monday.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties have registered a motion of public importance regarding the teachers’ agitation at the House of Representatives on Monday. The motion registered by Hit Raj Pandey, chief whip of CPN-Maoist Centre draws government’s attention towards 6 points relating to the demands and possible solutions to end the agitation.
Santosh Pariyar from Rastriya Swotantra Party, Sher Bahadur Kunwar from CPN-Unified Socialist Prabhu Shah from Aam Janata Partyand Chitra Bahadur K.C. from Janamorcha have backed the motion.
THrough the motion the political parties have demanded that the government implement the agreement signed with the school teachers, to enhance quality of school education, to resume classes of hundreds of thousands of school students, to conduct examinations on time, implement the decisions made by the Medical Council and to ensure quality and accessibility of health facilities.
