Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri has emphasized the need to formulate additional plans to prevent global warming.
Addressing the ‘Petersburg Climate Dialogue’ in Berlin, Germany, on Tuesday, he said that such a plan should be taken forward at the international climate conference (COP-30) to be held in Brazil this year.
The latest report from the World Meteorological Organization confirmed that 2024 was the hottest year on record. Minister Shahi Thakuri stressed the need for further initiatives to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
“This dialogue is a platform to unite all parties,” he said. “For the climate-vulnerable mountainous countries and the least developed countries, such platforms should receive adequate support and political momentum.
“Nepal is in the final stages of preparing its third NDC report, which we plan to submit soon. We urge all other countries to come forward with their NDC reports,” Minister Shahi said. We expect COP-30 to increase the annual mobilisation of USD 300 billion to USD 1.3 trillion, which should ensure that countries at risk have easy access to funding to implement their NDCs and NAPs and address losses and damages,” he added.
On the occasion, Minister Shahi Thakuri informed about the ‘Sagarmatha Sambaad’ that Nepal is going to organize in Kathmandu from 16th to 18th May. He noted that for climate-vulnerable mountainous countries and least developed countries, just transition pathways are different from those for developed economies. He drew the attention of the global community to the fact that, due to limited resources and infrastructure, vulnerable countries face a disproportionate share of climate risks.
The Government of Germany, for the past 14 years, has been organizing the Petersburg Climate Dialogue to promote the importance of multilateral role and international cooperation on climate change.
In the 15th edition of the dialogue, the countries with special role in the climate talks were invited. This is the first time that Minister Shahi Thakuri, representing the Government of Nepal, is participating in the 15th edition of this dialogue, which invites countries with a special role in climate negotiations.About 40 ministers from different countries are participating in the dialogue.
Nepali Ambassador to Germany Shail Rupakheti and climate expert Manjeet Dhakal were also present on the occasion.
