Police have recovered a huge cache of illegal foreign bank notes amounting from a truck during a security check at Jhor Mahankal area of Tokha Municipality, 20 km North of Kathmandu on Monday late night. A special team of police dispatched from Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office arrested a person along with the illegal foreign currency notes at 11 pm on Monday from Jhor Mahankal of Kathmandu bordering Rasuwa district, said a press release issued by Nepal Police on Tuesday.
A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office Teku, arrested a person with Rs 200 million from the Jhor Mahankalof Tokha Municipality-1, on Monday night. The truck was heading towards Rasuwa near Nepal-Tibet border carrying the huge amount of illegal foreign bank notes.
A person named Kusang Lama aka Fuchche, the driver of the truck has been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Kaji Kumar Acharya, also the spokesperson of Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, the police recovered various foreign bank notes worth more than Rs 250 million from a cabin near the driver’s seat hidden under a false bottom, when security checking was conducted based on a tip off. There were various foreign currency notes in the truck including US dollar and Euro totalling more than 250 million Nepalese rupees, said the senior police officer. As the vehicle was heading towards Nepal-China border the police have suspected that the money would be taken to China for the purpose of smuggling gold into Nepal from the northern neighbour.
There might be other persons involved in the illegal foreign currency racket, which we are investigating further, he said.
The arrestee was found to be involved in a similar kind of crime in the past and was freed few years ago after spending five years in jail.
