As its glaciers melt, Nepal is forced into an adaptation not of its choosing

A highly useful software JAMs J2000 is being used in many countries around the world to predict how much water will flow from melting snow, how much the level of glacial lakes will rise as temperatures rise, and how much glacial rivers will retreat.

The week, which is celebrated by organizing various programmes in all member countries of the organization in the third week of May every year at the call of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), falls in Nepal this year from March 17 to 23. As per the decision of the Government of Nepal and the Council of Ministers, various programmes were organized during the week by the government and NGOs of Nepal under the leadership of the Secretariat of the Water and Energy Commission.

International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in collaboration with the Society of Hydrology and Meteorology-Nepal (SOHM), Everest Engineering College, The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) and Universal Engineering and Science College conducted a training programme on the software called JAMS J2000 for Nepali female technical professionals involved in the field of hydrology. Using this software amount of water flowing from melting snow, how melting snow affects the flow of downstream rivers, and what will happen in the future if temperatures increase and more snow melts. Training was imparted based on data from the Dudhkoshi watershed on how much rivers will dry up during future dry seasons. Fifteen female trainees, including government, non-government organizations, private companies, and university students, benefited from the two-day training.
