A third-year B-Tech student of a private engineering college in Bhubaneshwor, India died allegedly by suicide in her hostel leading to tension in the campus, police said on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Prakriti Lamsal from Nepal, according to Indian news agency PTI. She was a B-Tech third-year student of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), varsity Registrar said.

KIIT in a statement said: “A Nepali student studying in the third year of B-Tech committed suicide in the hostel yesterday (Sunday). Bhubaneswar DCP Pinak Mishra said: “We have registered a case at Infocity Police Station based on the allegation that a male student abated her suicide. The accused student is in the police custody and subjected to interrogation. The police have seized the mobile phone, laptop and other gadgets of the deceased woman. We are undertaking a scientific investigation into the matter.”

Since there was some tension among the Nepali students studying at KIIT over the girl’s death, the university authorities had a discussion with the agitating foreign students. “Keeping in view the situation, the Nepal students have been sent to their respective homes. The situation presently remained calm,” the KIIT said.

Meanwhile, two busloads of Nepali students were dropped at the Cuttack Railway Station on Monday. “We were told to vacate hostel room and dropped at the railway station. We had to appear for examination on February 28…” a male student told reporters at the Cuttack railway station.

Nepal students who were studying at the university have alleged that they were unable to gather information from the university officials about the girl’s demise. Due to this, the group of students launched a protest on the campus.

“..We were pushed out of the hostel today (Monday). A girl from Nepal was found dead yesterday. We went to International Office to find out more details about this but we could not find anything. We were there overnight, sitting on a dharna. We were sent back to the hostel from there. We were finally told to pack up and leave within an hour. We have nothing with us. We don’t know how we will go. We have not even had food…We are trying to get a ticket,” Anil Yadav from Nepal, a student at KIIT told ANI.
