Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has underscored the need for government owned Nepal Telecom to expand its services and compete with the private sector by making use of the advanced technology. “As the largest telecommunication company is losing its profit one after another year, there is a need for the Nepal Telecom to review its performances and move forward,” remarked minister Gurung speaking as chief guest at the programme organized on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of Nepal Telecom in Kathmandu.

Gurung also advised that the general public should hold at least 25 percent of Nepal Telecom’s shares so as to expand its business and to ensure the company remains accountable to the people.

“Nepal Telecom should seriously review its business operations, given that its income has been declining each year, while private telecommunications companies continue to advance,” he said.

“E-governance is linked to good governance. To achieve this, 4G services must be expanded to every village. This sector will experience significant growth if we can accomplish this,” said the Communications Minister.

Minister Gurung said that the government is working to amend laws, Acts and legal instruments related to communications, information, and technology to position Nepal as an IT hub.

On the occasion Minister GUrung also launched the commercial service of Voice Over WiFi. Now the customers of Nepal Telecom can use the service of VOice Over WiFi starting from February 4, 2025.

Managing Director of Nepal Telecom Sangita Pahadi said that the Nepal Telecom has earned a net profit of NRs. 6.23 billion in the year 2024-25, though it is little less than the previous year. Nepal Telecom has 21.24 million customers across the country and it has 50.44 percent share in the Nepalese telecom market, she added.
