Sher Bahadur Deuba, president of Nepali Congress (NC) and former Prime Minister has mentioned that Nepal should send draw attention of the world community to reduce the climate change impacts.
Speaking at an interaction programme organized by the Department of Environment and Climate Change of the NC on Friday, Deuba elaborated “The sea level has risen, the mountains are becoming bare. So, Nepal needs to pay the most attention to climate change impacts,”.
He said that it would be a great help if 60 percent of the forest areas in the country could be saved. He said that the consumption of fossil fuels should be reduced and efforts should be aimed to maximize the use of electric vehicles. “Nepal is suffering from the climate change impacts. Nepal does not just want to reduce its effects, there are many things Nepal can do to send messages to the world,” he said.
Deuba opined that it will be a great achievement in reducing the climate change impacts even if the use of electric vehicles could be increased in the Kathmandu Valley. Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi said that though Nepal’s contributions to carbon emissions is insignificant, Nepal is playing an important role in solving the climate crisis.
Likewise, NC leader Maha Laxmi Upadhyay emphasized that Nepal should lead the issue of climate change at the international level. Nepali Congress central leader and Head of Environment and Climate Change Department of the NC, Kalyan Gurung, said he will be active in lawmaking within the party by setting policies on climate change.
