Renowned wildlife photographer Chungba Sherpa has passed away on Sunday at the age of 64.
Sherpa died while undergoing treatment for liver-related ailments at Grande Hospital in Kathmandu. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.
He was a long-time member of the Nepali Congress. He was chairperson of the local level committee of Nepali Congress of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Committee. Chungba. He had also served as the former chairperson of Chaurikharka Village Development Committee and was engaged in the tourism sector.
Sherpa entered into wildlife photography late in his life but established himself as a leading wildlife photographer in short time. He spent much of his time in the mountains and forests, capturing rare species such as the snow leopard and Royal Bengal tiger. He was much credited for photos of snow leopards. In addition, he is well remembered for his iconic photograph of a wild yak which has been featured on Nepal’s Rs 5 banknote.
